"Air Marshal Aneke Commends Pilots’ Quick Thinking and Professionalism After In-Flight Emergency Near NAF Base Kainji"

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has paid a solidarity visit to the two Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Alpha Jet pilots who successfully ejected from their aircraft after experiencing an in-flight emergency near NAF Base Kainji in Niger State.

The visit, which took place on Sunday, came less than 24 hours after the jet went down a few kilometres from Karabonde town in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The pilots had earlier steered the malfunctioning aircraft away from residential areas before ejecting—an act the NAF leadership has hailed as courageous, disciplined, and professionally executed.

A Visit of Support, Gratitude, and Recognition

Air Marshal Aneke met with the aircrew at a medical facility in Abuja, where they are undergoing standard medical examination. During the visit, he checked on their wellbeing and commended their calmness, tactical awareness, and adherence to safety procedures under intense pressure.

According to NAF, the Alpha Jet encountered a technical malfunction shortly after take-off on Saturday. Realising that the aircraft could no longer remain airborne, the pilots acted swiftly, guiding it away from populated areas and initiating a safe ejection sequence.

The Air Force, in an official statement released on Sunday, confirmed that both pilots landed safely and remain in stable condition. Photographs from the visit show the CAS engaging the pilots warmly—an unmistakable signal of appreciation for their professionalism and split-second decision-making.

Swift Emergency Response and Investigation Underway

NAF disclosed that its search and rescue teams, crash response units, and medical personnel responded rapidly to secure the crash site, ensure the safety of residents, and coordinate the recovery of the aircrew.

In line with established military aviation protocols, Air Marshal Aneke has also ordered the immediate establishment of a board of inquiry. The board will determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure and review all circumstances surrounding the incident.

The CAS praised the pilots for preventing what could have been a catastrophic outcome, emphasizing that their prudent decision saved lives and protected nearby communities.

A Reminder of the Risks of Military Aviation

The Air Force noted that the incident highlights the inherent risks of military aviation, where pilots must constantly maintain high readiness levels and be prepared to make instantaneous life-or-death decisions. It also reinforces the vital importance of rigorous training, continuous aircraft maintenance, and a strong safety culture.

Reassuring the public, NAF reaffirmed its strict adherence to safety protocols and pledged its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property in line with its constitutional responsibilities.

A Story of Courage and Professionalism

While the crash of an Alpha Jet is a serious loss, the survival of both pilots—and the professionalism displayed—has been widely regarded as a testament to the quality of NAF training and the resilience of its personnel.

Air Marshal Aneke’s visit not only celebrated a narrow escape but also sent a powerful message of solidarity, leadership, and institutional responsibility. It was, in essence, a salute to two officers whose vigilance and discipline turned a potential national tragedy into a story of survival and exceptional duty.
