In response to widespread outrage sparked by a viral video, the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria has addressed allegations of discrimination at a Chinese supermarket situated in the Royal Choice Estate, Airport Road, Abuja.
The video, which surfaced on social media, depicted purported instances where Nigerians were denied entry into the supermarket, igniting a wave of public condemnation.
In an official statement issued on Monday, the Chamber clarified that the Royal Choice Estate is not solely a supermarket but encompasses an office complex and residential apartments.
It underscored that the supermarket in question operates within the residential area, which is distinct from the Chamber’s premises.
According to the statement, access to the residential area is regulated by security protocols, with privately occupied residents overseeing visitor entry.
The Chamber refuted claims of discrimination, asserting that no individual was barred from accessing the estate or the supermarket for grocery purchases.
However, the Chamber expressed regret over an altercation reported at the estate’s entrance gate between security personnel and a customer, clarifying that it does not align with the management’s stance or the Chamber’s principles.
Emphasising its commitment to equality and inclusivity, the China General Chamber of Commerce welcomed firsthand visits to verify the situation, highlighting its dedication to fostering friendship and promoting economic development between both nations.
In a related development, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) took action by sealing off the supermarket premises. FCCPC officials conducted inquiries with Nigerian staff members before proceeding to shut down the establishment.
The move by FCCPC has garnered praise from Nigerians, who have commended the agency’s intervention while expressing bewilderment over the controversy on national soil.
