China’s former Agriculture Minister, Tang Renjian, has been handed a death sentence with a two year reprieve for accepting bribes worth $37.6 million.
The Changchun Intermediate People’s Court in Jilin province delivered the verdict, citing Tang’s crimes as particularly severe.
Tang accepted cash and property bribes totaling over 268 million yuan between 2007 and 2024. According to the court, Tang’s confession, cooperation, and return of illicit gains warrant leniency. “The court granted leniency due to Tang’s confession, cooperation, and return of illicit gains,” the verdict stated.
Tang held various positions, including governor of Gansu province and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The sentence also strips Tang of his political rights for life and confiscates his personal assets.
This sentencing is part of President Xi Jinping’s anti corruption drive, which has disciplined over a million officials since 2012. Tang’s case reflects the Chinese government’s commitment to cracking down on corruption.
“The federal government remains fully committed to ensuring energy security, protecting consumers, and maintaining stability in the domestic petroleum products market,” is not related to this case, however, it shows how governments prioritize stability and security in key sectors.
