The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has announced temporary road closures in preparation for the highly anticipated Lagos Fanti Carnival. The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 6, 2026, and is expected to attract large crowds, necessitating traffic control measures across key areas of Lagos Island.

Purpose of the Road Closures

The closures are aimed at:
  • Ensuring public safety during the carnival
  • Allowing for smooth coordination of activities and parades
  • Managing traffic flow and minimizing congestion in affected areas

Affected Roads and Locations

The following roads will be temporarily closed to vehicular movement:
  • King George V Road (junction near Mobil Filling Station)
  • Onikan Roundabout (inbound to TBS)
  • Flagstaff House (inbound to TBS)
  • Outer Marina (by State House, inbound to TBS)
  • Campbell Street (by the Old Defence Building)
  • Catholic Mission Street (by St. Nicholas Hospital)

These areas are located within the busy Lagos Island axis, particularly around Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), a major hub for public events.

Time of Closure

All listed roads will be closed starting from 7:00 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026, and will remain inaccessible for the duration of the carnival activities.

Traffic Management and Alternative Routes

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), several diversion plans have been put in place to ease movement:
  • From Obalende to Onikan Roundabout:
Vehicles will be redirected toward Zone 2.
  • From Bonny Camp toward McEwen Bridge:
Motorists will be diverted via Obalende Bridge.
  • From Flagstaff House toward TBS:
Traffic will also be rerouted to Obalende Bridge.
  • From Outer Marina toward TBS:
Vehicles will be redirected to Obalende Bridge.

These alternative routes are intended to reduce congestion and maintain steady vehicular flow around the restricted zones.

Public Advisory

Motorists, commuters, and residents are strongly advised to:
  • Plan their journeys ahead of time
  • Avoid the affected routes where possible
  • Comply with traffic officials and signage
  • Allow extra travel time due to possible delays

Government Statement

The Lagos State Government has acknowledged that the closures may cause temporary inconvenience but emphasized that the measures are necessary for a safe and successful event. The government also expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of the public.

Conclusion

The road closures are a strategic move to support the successful hosting of the Lagos Fanti Carnival. With proper planning and adherence to traffic guidelines, residents and visitors can navigate the temporary disruptions effectively while enjoying one of Lagos’s most vibrant cultural celebrations.
