The pursuit of a legal education requires enrollment in a university programme officially recognised by the Council of Legal Education (CLE). Only graduates from these accredited institutions are eligible to proceed to the Nigerian Law School and ultimately qualify to practice law in the country.

To guide prospective law students, this report presents a comprehensive list of 114 universities across Nigeria that are approved to offer Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), programmes.

The list includes federal, state, and private universities, highlighting the institutions that meet the rigorous academic and regulatory standards set by CLE. This compilation serves as a vital reference for students, parents, and educational stakeholders seeking accurate and up-to-date information on legitimate pathways to legal education in Nigeria.

Overview — Law Programme Approval in Nigeria

  • The Council of Legal Education has released an updated list of 114 universities approved to run Law (LL.B), programmes nationwide.

  • Only universities on this list are authorised to admit students into law programmes; admissions to unapproved programmes risk sanctions and Bar School ineligibility.

  • Of these 114 institutions, most have full approval, while a few are noted with moratoriums on admissions for specified academic sessions (e.g., Baze University, Lead City University, Nigerian Police Academy), as per CLE’s conditions.

Key Points & Notes

1. Regulatory Authority:
The Council of Legal Education is the statutory body with authority to license and regulate law faculties. Law programmes in universities must be approved by CLE for graduates to proceed to Nigerian Law School and qualify for legal practice.

2. Sanctions for Non‑Approval:
Universities admitting law students without CLE approval risk sanctions, and students from such programmes are deemed ineligible for Law School.

3. Moratoriums:
A few recognised universities are included on the list with specified moratoriums on law admissions (e.g., Baze University, Lead City University, Nigeria Police Academy), which temporarily limit admissions as per CLE directives.

4. Dynamic List:
CLE routinely reviews and updates this list to reflect new approvals, suspensions, or changes in accreditation status. Future updates may alter the count and membership of approved universities.
