Controversy Erupts Over Naval Operation At Rivers State Deputy Governor’s Residence.
A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in Rivers State, where the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), has faced criticism for ordering naval personnel to the residence of suspended Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu. The operation, which took place in the early hours of April 25, saw the removal of three vehicles, sparking widespread condemnation.
According to eyewitnesses, the naval officers carried out the operation in a commando-style raid, taking away two Toyota Hilux vehicles and one Toyota Hiace bus. However, the Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Rivers State Government, Mr. Hector Igbikiowubo, claimed that only one Hilux bus was retrieved for operational purposes.
The action has been widely criticized, with many questioning the use of force and the militarization of governance in Rivers State. Vincent Chimene Wopara, spokesperson for Democracy Watch Nigeria, described the development as a “targeted provocation” aimed at intimidating and humiliating the office of the Deputy Governor.
The controversy comes amid concerns over the non-release of monthly payments for gratuity and the stoppage of palliative vehicles donated by suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Pensioners and workers in the state have expressed their distress, with some pensioners reportedly falling ill or passing away due to the delay in payments.
While the government has promised to address the issues, the situation remains tense, with many calling for the return of Governor Fubara and an end to the militarization of governance in Rivers State.
