President Bola Tinubu on Sunday played host to governors of States that share boundaries with Niger Republic.

It was gathered the meeting held at the State House, Abuja, was part of consultations by the President on the situation in Niger.

Recall that the Northern Elites have strongly voiced their opposition to the proposed military offensive against the junta in Niger. They express concerns over the potential repercussions of such action on Nigeria.

Tinubu, in his dual role as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger Republic, demanding the restoration of democracy by relinquishing power to Mohammed Bazoum.

This led to quite a number of sanctions part of which resulted in the closure of borders with Niger, including an indefinite suspension of flight activities.

The President has formally written to the leadership of the National Assembly, seeking approval for the deployment of military personnel to the troubled region of Niger.

GOVIMA reported that on Saturday, the Senate turned down the request while it asked Tinubu and other leaders of the region to tread with caution in addressing the political situation.
