A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the request of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to allow forensic experts to examine electronic evidence tendered in his ongoing $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion fraud case.
The defence team had sought access to scrutinize WhatsApp conversations and a mobile device (tagged “iPhone 2”) submitted by the prosecution.
Granting the application, the trial judge ordered that the process must not compromise the integrity of the evidence.
“Only one defence counsel and one forensic expert shall be present, along with the prosecution’s representatives. The chain of custody must be preserved,” the court ruled.
The judge further fixed September 24 and 26, 2025, for the forensic review to take place.
Emefiele, who served as CBN governor from 2014 to 2023, is facing multiple allegations, including abuse of office, corruption, receiving gratification, and fraudulent property transactions.
His lawyer had earlier argued that independent forensic analysis was essential to ensure fairness in the trial.
“We need to subject the electronic evidence to an impartial examination so the court can be properly guided,” the defence team submitted.
In conclusion, the court’s approval of forensic examination underscores the seriousness of the trial and the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in high-profile corruption cases in Nigeria. The upcoming review is expected to play a crucial role in determining the credibility of the evidence presented against Emefiele.
