Customs Intercept Cannabis Worth N112 Million In Ondo/Ekiti Command.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ondo/Ekiti Command, has made a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking with the interception of over 140 sacks of Cannabis sativa, popularly known as Indian hemp, weighing more than 1,400 kilogrammes and valued at N112 million.

The seizure took place in Ado Ekiti during a routine operation, as confirmed by the Comptroller of the Command, Mrs Morenikeji Bewaji. Two suspects were reportedly apprehended while transporting the illicit substance. The suspects, along with the confiscated drugs, were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

However, Bewaji later revealed that both suspects absconded after being granted bail on health grounds. In response, the command arrested their surety, Mr Victor Ayodeji, and also transferred him to the NDLEA for prosecution.

Describing the seizure as a “significant breakthrough,” Bewaji expressed concern about the increasing circulation of illegal drugs, especially Cannabis sativa, which she described as a serious threat to national security, public health, and socio-economic stability.

“In our fight against the threat of illicit drugs in our country, inter-agency collaboration remains a cornerstone for success. The partnership between the NCS and the NDLEA is a shining example of effective synergy,” she stated.

She emphasised the commitment of both agencies to deepen cooperation, enhance intelligence sharing, and engage relevant stakeholders in the battle against drug trafficking and abuse. According to her, the ultimate goal is to strengthen national security while ensuring the smooth facilitation of legitimate trade.

Mrs Bewaji also urged the public to support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information. She stressed that combating drugs and other forms of criminal activity requires a united effort from all citizens.

Speaking on behalf of the NDLEA, the State Commander, Mr Nanzing Sallah, represented by the Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Mr Adaramola Olumuyiwa, lauded the Customs Service for its swift and effective operation. He reaffirmed the NDLEA’s dedication to sustained collaboration in the war against drug trafficking and organised crime.

The seizure marks a notable victory in the ongoing efforts to curb the distribution of illicit drugs and reinforces the importance of inter-agency cooperation in protecting the nation’s wellbeing.
