Dangote Refinery Cracks Down On Sabotage With Workforce Shakeup

The Dangote Refinery has initiated a major workforce reorganization in response to repeated acts of sabotage that threatened the operational safety of its 650,000 barrels per day facility.

According to the refinery’s management, the decision was necessary to safeguard its assets and ensure smooth operations. “It is not a mass sack, it’s a clean-up,” a senior official explained.

The reorganization, which affected a limited number of employees, was designed to plug leakages and protect the company’s assets. The management emphasized that production activities remain fully operational, with both Nigerian and expatriate staff continuing their work. “Anyone who doesn’t have a hand in sabotage has nothing to worry about,” the official added.

The refinery’s management cited repeated cases of sabotage as the reason for the shake-up, which led to major safety concerns. A letter dated September 24, 2025, and signed by Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, directed affected staff to return company property and await clearance for their entitlements. “In view of the many recent cases of reported sabotage… the Management is constrained to carry out a total reorganisation of the plant,” the letter read.

The move has sparked debates about employee welfare and labor practices at the refinery. The Nigeria Labour Congress emphasized the need for fair treatment of workers and urged the management to prioritize dialogue with employees. “The word ‘sack’ was never used,” a refinery official clarified, adding that affected staff may be reabsorbed after investigations are concluded and issues are addressed.

The Dangote Refinery has faced several challenges since its launch, including disputes with labor unions and marketers. The refinery’s management has reaffirmed its commitment to operational excellence and delivering value to Nigerians. “The Dangote Refinery is a critical national asset, and we are fully committed to protecting it from any form of sabotage,” the management stated.

As the refinery navigates its operational challenges, the management faces the dual task of maintaining efficiency while addressing public and employee concerns. Industry analysts have commended the refinery’s proactive approach to addressing operational challenges, citing the need for decisive action to maintain efficiency and security in a complex facility like the Dangote Refinery.
