Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied reports alleging that it imported finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing the claims as false, malicious, and misleading.
In a statement released on Friday, the company clarified that the cargo being referred to was not finished petrol but an intermediate feedstock that would undergo full refining at its facility. According to Dangote Refinery, processing a mix of crude oils and intermediate feedstocks is a common global practice aimed at optimizing both production efficiency and fuel quality.
“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol,” the company explained. “It will be fully refined in our processing units to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.” Dangote Refinery further noted that its operations are conducted within a Free Trade Zone, emphasizing that it only refines and sells high quality fuels that meet all regulatory specifications.
The refinery highlighted that its exports to the United States and Europe, some of the world’s most regulated markets, clearly demonstrate its adherence to international benchmarks for quality and safety. “All imported feedstocks are accompanied by quality certificates, which we transparently share with regulators,” the statement said.
Reiterating its commitment to transparency, the company said it is ready to make its quality documentation available to the public to further build confidence in its operations. “We are also willing to make these documents available to the public in the interest of full transparency and accountability,” it added.
Dangote Refinery concluded by reaffirming its dedication to Nigeria’s energy independence and its mission to uphold global best practices while producing cleaner and safer fuels for both local and international markets.
