Datti Baba‑Ahmed Denies Announcing Presidential Bid

Former Labour Party VP Candidate Clarifies Recent Speculations About 2027 Elections

Yusuf Datti Baba‑Ahmed, the former vice‑presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the 2023 elections has firmly denied reports that he recently announced plans to run for the presidency in the 2027 general election. In a televised interview, Baba‑Ahmed described the claims as inaccurate and a misrepresentation of his comments amid ongoing political discussions.

Clarifying the Controversy

The controversy began after media and social media reports emerged suggesting that Baba‑Ahmed was positioning himself for a presidential bid.

Some interpretations of his recent public remarks led to speculation that he was preparing to contest Nigeria’s highest office. However, in his clarification on Channels Television, he made it clear that this was not the case.

“I never declared to contest the presidency two days ago,” Baba‑Ahmed said, stressing that comments attributed to him were taken out of context. What he actually did was reaffirm his commitment to the Labour Party and express his continued involvement in its affairs.

What He Actually Said

According to Baba‑Ahmed:
  • His recent remarks were solely meant to confirm that he remains a member of the Labour Party.

  • He did not make any formal or informal declaration of presidential ambition.

  • While he acknowledged that future political possibilities could emerge, he emphasized that no decision or formal announcement has been made.

He reiterated that any future political move, including declaring for the presidency, would follow established procedures. This includes waiting for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to release the official election timetable and for the Labour Party’s internal mechanisms to open the window for aspirants to express interest.

Concerns Over Misinformation

Baba‑Ahmed also used the opportunity to call out the role of social media in spreading what he described as misleading narratives.

He argued that sensationalism on digital platforms can distort political statements and urged established media organisations to act responsibly as filters to prevent misinformation from misleading the public.

Context Within the Labour Party

The clarification comes at a time of heightened political activity within the Labour Party. Following reports of former LP presidential candidate Peter Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), discussions about the future leadership and direction of the party have intensified.

Baba‑Ahmed’s recent remarks also included welcoming Obi back to the Labour Party should he not secure the ADC presidential ticket — a comment that underlines ongoing realignments within opposition politics ahead of 2027.

Impact for our Political Space

Baba‑Ahmed’s statement reflects the often tight media environment of our politics where off‑hand comments can quickly be amplified into formal announcements. His clarification underscores the importance of:

  • Distinguishing reaffirmation of party membership from actual political declarations.

  • Following due process before aspirants can declare intentions to run for public office.

For now, Datti Baba‑Ahmed remains a prominent voice within the Labour Party, but as he himself has confirmed, no presidential bid has been formally announced.

In summary:

Despite widespread reports to the contrary, Datti Baba‑Ahmed insists that he has not declared his intention to contest the Nigerian presidency. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party and urged patience for formal processes to unfold before any political aspirations can be made official.
