David Moyes will step down as manager of West Ham United at the end of the season, as Julen Lopetegui agrees move to succeed the Scottish man in London.
West Ham United has confirmed that manager David Moyes will be leaving the club at the end of the Premier League season.
This decision follows reports from BBC Sport’s Guillem Balague that former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is set to replace Moyes.
Moyes, aged 61, faced mounting pressure due to a recent string of poor results, culminating in a 5-0 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday.
Despite this, Moyes expressed gratitude for his time at West Ham, highlighting the club’s progress during his tenure. He returned for a second stint in December 2019 and notably led the team to Europa Conference League success last season.
However, West Ham’s recent form has been concerning, with just one win in their last 10 matches across all competitions. Currently sitting ninth in the Premier League, they are unlikely to secure a fourth consecutive season in Europe.
While an official appointment has not been finalized, it is reported that Julen Lopetegui is close to joining West Ham following his departure from Wolves last year.
The club has begun the search for Moyes’ successor but will refrain from further comments until an appointment is made.
David Sullivan, the club’s joint chairman, praised Moyes for his contributions, acknowledging his role in West Ham’s progress and success. Moyes had previously managed West Ham from November 2017 to May 2018 before returning in late 2019.
The announcement of Moyes’ departure allows for a proper send-off from the West Ham supporters, with the final home fixture against Luton Town set to be a tribute to his time at the club.
