In a recent interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, addressed the ongoing debate surrounding federal lawmakers’ salaries. Kalu emphasised that the current salaries are insufficient to adequately fulfil their duties to their constituents.
He clarified that while the salary itself may not be as substantial as perceived, the allowances are crucial for carrying out the responsibilities assigned by the electorate. Kalu underscored that allowances are strictly monitored and mismanagement could lead to sanctions upon retirement.
Regarding calls for a 50% salary reduction, Kalu argued that such a measure would not significantly impact lawmakers’ ability to fulfil their duties, especially considering economic factors like inflation and operational costs. He highlighted the expenses involved in maintaining constituency offices, transportation, and aids necessary for effective representation.
Kalu expressed willingness among lawmakers to adjust their salaries if it contributes to moving Nigeria forward, stressing that they are accountable to their constituents who elected them.
Additionally, Kalu commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to reducing the cost of governance. He praised Tinubu’s directive to implement the recommendations of the 2012 Steve Oronsaye panel, aimed at streamlining government agencies and parastatals.
Acknowledging Tinubu’s proactive approach to governance, Kalu noted that the president’s focus on cost-cutting measures is crucial, especially amidst the country’s numerous challenges. He highlighted the relevance of implementing the panel’s recommendations in the ongoing constitution review process, emphasising the importance of reducing government expenditure.
Kalu’s remarks reflect ongoing discussions within Nigeria’s political sphere regarding the optimisation of government spending and the effective utilisation of lawmakers’ resources to address national priorities.
