The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, announced on Thursday that significant progress has been made in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution.
Speaking at a press conference organized by the House Committee on Constitution Review, Kalu disclosed that the first draft report of the review process is expected to be completed by August 2024.
Kalu, who chairs the Committee on Constitution Review, outlined the timeline for the completion of the review, indicating that the final clean copy for presidential assent is projected to be ready by August 2025.
He emphasised the committee’s commitment to ensuring thoroughness and inclusivity in the process, highlighting that inputs from citizens and zonal consultations will be considered.
According to Kalu, the draft amendments will undergo various stages of scrutiny and harmonisation with the aim of achieving consensus among stakeholders.
He expressed optimism that by August 2025, the amended constitution would be transmitted to the President for assent, thereby fulfilling the committee’s target of completing the task within 24 months.
Kalu further underscored the importance of timely completion, stating that by December 2025, Nigeria is anticipated to have a fully amended constitution in place. He assured that the committee is dedicated to upholding transparency and accountability throughout the review process, ensuring that the resulting constitution reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
