The Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Development has affirmed that the Federal Government considers the development of Nigeria’s livestock industry a top priority.
Speaking at a recent event, the minister highlighted that the sector, valued at over N33 trillion, remains significantly underutilized despite its enormous potential to create jobs, improve food security, and boost national income.
According to the minister, the government is implementing strategies to modernize the livestock sector and attract private sector investment. “Our goal is to transform livestock farming into a profitable and sustainable industry that contributes meaningfully to the economy,” he said, noting that innovative approaches and technology adoption are central to these plans.
The minister also unveiled a 15-Year Livestock Investment Master Plan aimed at addressing key challenges such as low productivity, inadequate veterinary services, and insufficient infrastructure for animal husbandry. The plan seeks to enhance efficiency, improve animal genetics, and increase meat, dairy, and poultry production nationwide.
He emphasized the importance of protecting Nigeria’s animal genetic resources and announced the launch of a National Strategy and Action Plan to conserve and optimize indigenous livestock breeds. This initiative, he said, would ensure long-term sustainability and competitiveness in both local and international markets.
The minister further highlighted that strengthening the livestock sector would reduce reliance on imported meat and animal products, improve rural livelihoods, and stimulate agro-allied industries. “Developing this sector is crucial not only for food security but also for empowering rural communities and creating millions of jobs,” he added.
In conclusion, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to turning Nigeria into a livestock powerhouse, urging stakeholders, investors, and farmers to actively participate in the transformation process. “Our priority is clear: a thriving, modern livestock industry that drives national growth and prosperity,” he said.
