Diri Says Defection To APC Was In Bayelsa’s Best Interest

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has explained that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress was taken in the overall interest of the state.

He made this known during the fourteenth Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, marking his first public reaction since his resignation from the PDP in mid October.

Governor Diri said the move was driven by a desire to ensure continued development for Bayelsa and to keep the state connected to national affairs. According to him, his choice was not for personal benefit but for the collective progress of the people. He said, “Somebody had to take the decision and I took it on behalf of the state. Some of you might not understand now, but later it will be clear.”

He noted that politics should be used to promote growth and unity rather than create division, adding that peace and stability in Bayelsa remain a priority. The governor said, “Politics is for development, not for harming your brother. The peace and security we enjoy today are reasons to thank God.”

Diri also highlighted his administration’s achievements, stating that Bayelsa has benefited from both completed and ongoing projects despite political changes. He stressed that the progress recorded so far is a reflection of focused leadership and the desire to deliver quality governance for the people.

Minister of State for Petroleum Oil, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who attended the thanksgiving for the first time, described Diri as a leader who prioritises unity. He commended the governor for his decision, stating that Bayelsa should not isolate itself from national decision making if it intends to move forward.

The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, also praised the governor’s developmental efforts, saying his leadership has brought visible growth to the state. Top dignitaries at the thanksgiving included lawmakers, political leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders. The governor is expected to be formally received into the APC at a reception scheduled for Monday November 3.
