The Ebonyi State Police Command has warned its officers against corruption and extortion, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct.
This warning follows a viral video on social media depicting police officers acting unprofessionally at their duty posts. Commissioner of Police Anthonia Uche-Anya reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining a corruption-free work environment.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, denounced the unprofessional behavior of the officers, adding that they would not go unpunished. “We unequivocally condemn their actions and have identified the officers involved; disciplinary actions have already been initiated against them,” Ukandu said.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9, Suleiman Yusuf, also warned officers against extortion, emphasizing the need for discipline and responsibility among personnel. “Be more diligent and professional in your operation. You must know you have your work to do and always do it well, believing your reward will come,” Yusuf advised.
The police command’s stance against corruption and extortion aligns with the Inspector-General of Police’s vision of promoting professionalism and accountability within the force. Any officer found wanting would face disciplinary actions, and supervisory officers would also be held liable.
The command faces a shortage of manpower, a common issue affecting the Nigeria Police Force. Despite this challenge, the police have successfully addressed various security challenges in the state through stakeholder dialogue.
The Ebonyi State Police Command’s efforts to promote professionalism and accountability are expected to improve security and reduce crime in the state. With the command’s commitment to zero tolerance for corruption and extortion, citizens can expect better service from the police.
