The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has dispatched a robust Election Observation Mission to Togo.
The mission, comprising 40 observers, is slated to oversee the legislative and regional elections scheduled for April 29, 2024.
According to a statement released by the regional bloc, this initiative aligns with Article 12 of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, underscoring the organization’s commitment to supporting its Member States in conducting free and fair elections.
Heading the mission is Mrs. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice-President of The Gambia, bringing a wealth of experience to the endeavour.
The composition of the mission reflects a diverse range of expertise, including Ambassadors from ECOWAS-accredited Member States, representatives from the ECOWAS Court of Justice and Parliament, civil society organizations, media professionals, and election observation specialists from across West Africa.
The decision to deploy the observation mission follows the recommendations of a pre-election fact-finding mission that assessed the preparatory phases of the elections during its visit to Togo from April 15 to 20, 2024.
During their tenure in Togo, the observation mission will engage in consultations with key stakeholders in the electoral process and meticulously monitor the voting process leading up to April 29, 2024.
