Edo State Governor Approves ₦1 Billion Bursary For Students.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced a significant investment in education by approving a ₦1 billion bursary scheme for students of Edo State origin studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The announcement, made following a town hall meeting with young people in Benin City, underscores the governor’s commitment to supporting the educational aspirations of Edo’s youth.

The bursary initiative, which is set to become an annual programme, aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by students and their families. Governor Okpebholo revealed that the decision was prompted by a passionate appeal from youth leaders during the town hall, who called for financial assistance to support Edo indigenes pursuing higher education nationwide. The governor, who has been in office for just eight months, responded swiftly to the request, demonstrating his administration’s focus on education as a cornerstone for development.

To ensure the funds reach genuine beneficiaries, eligibility for the bursary will be determined through rigorous verification processes, including confirmation of applicants’ Local Government of Origin. This measure aims to guarantee that only authentic Edo indigenes benefit from the scheme. The governor emphasised that the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader vision to enhance access to quality education, foster academic excellence, and empower Edo youths to contribute meaningfully to the state and nation’s progress.

Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, stated that further details regarding application procedures and timelines would be released by relevant government agencies in due course. The announcement has been met with widespread approval from students and community leaders, who see it as a transformative step towards supporting education in Edo State.

The ₦1 billion bursary is part of Governor Okpebholo’s five-point agenda, which prioritises education alongside security, infrastructure, healthcare, and food sufficiency. This bold move is expected to provide significant relief to families grappling with the rising costs of tertiary education and inspire a new generation of Edo scholars to pursue their academic ambitions with confidence.
