The National Association of University student has threatened to protest against the recent hike in tuition fees in the country, this is coming days after the University of Lagos,Akoka Lagos increase the tuition fee by about 100 per cent

In an exclusive statement titled “Warning Against Tuition Fee Increment,” issued on Saturday, the Chairman of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Erubami Ayobami, and the National Deputy President, Babalola Daniel, disclosed their opposition to the tuition fee increment.

The statement was directed to newsmen as they expressed their concerns regarding the proposed increase in tuition fees at the University of Lagos.

“It is with great displeasure as we Write to condemn the act of the Federal Government as well as higher institutions who have decided to increase the price of tuition in this current economic disintegration,” part of the statement read.

On Friday, GOVIMA reported that the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, has implemented an increase in tuition fees for its undergraduate students.

According to a statement released on July 20, 2023, by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (UNILAG branch), this decision came after a meeting with the top management staff of the institution.

Previously, students paid a tuition fee of N19,000, but the management has now fixed the new fees at a higher rate. However, specific details about the exact amount of the increase were not mentioned in the provided information.

According to the circular entitled, “Approved fees/ charges for Federal Unity Colleges (1st Term) for new students“, signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, new students are expected to part with ₦100,000 instead of the previous N45,000.

The National Association of University Students (NAUS), also expressed their concern, stating that the current state of university education is already discouraging, and any implementations that could have a further negative impact on the educational system would not be supported.

They issued this statement in response to the reported increase in tuition fees at the University of Lagos.

“University is where every profession that runs the nation is trained and mentored, investing in the origin of every profession should never be a problem for any nation interested in development.

It warned that the student populace would not hesitate to stage a protest against any enactment on tuition increment.

“We want to reiterate that as students, we won’t hesitate to come out en-mass to protest against any form of implementation that poses a threat to the students’ community,” it added.

In its assurance to students, NAUS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding their interests and welfare at all times.

The student body also appealed to other higher institutions considering tuition fee hikes to reconsider their plans, emphasizing that such actions could have detrimental effects on the academic system and negatively impact the students.
