AFCON 2025: Egypt Rally Past Zimbabwe As Salah Delivers Decisive Goal

Captain steps up when it matters most

Mohamed Salah once again proved decisive on the continental stage as Egypt began their AFCON 2025 campaign with a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over Zimbabwe in Morocco. The Egyptian captain scored the winning goal late in the contest, capping a performance that underlined both his leadership and Egypt’s determination to challenge for a record-extending eighth Africa Cup of Nations title.

The match did not start as expected for the Pharaohs. Despite dominating early possession and controlling the tempo, Egypt were stunned in the 20th minute when Zimbabwe took a shock lead. Prince Dube capitalised on a rare attacking moment, firing a low, diving shot past goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy to put the Warriors ahead against the run of play.

The goal did little to change the overall pattern of the match. Egypt continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession, patiently moving the ball across midfield and down the flanks, with Salah frequently drawing the attention of multiple defenders. Zimbabwe, however, remained compact and disciplined, relying on defensive solidity to frustrate their more fancied opponents.

Egypt created several chances to restore parity before halftime. Omar Marmoush came close when he forced Zimbabwe goalkeeper, Washington Arubi into a strong save, while Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” also tested the defense with a low effort. Despite sustained pressure, Zimbabwe held firm, going into the break with a surprising 1–0 advantage.

The second half saw Egypt increase the intensity. Head coach Rui Vitória urged his side to play with greater urgency, pushing defenders higher and committing more bodies forward. The pressure eventually told in the 64th minute when Marmoush found space on the edge of the area and blasted a powerful shot past Arubi to bring Egypt level at 1–1.

The equaliser shifted momentum firmly in Egypt’s favour. Zimbabwe attempted to regroup and slow the game down, but the Pharaohs sensed an opportunity to complete the comeback. Just when it appeared the Warriors might cling to a draw, Salah delivered the decisive moment.

Showing strength, composure, and his trademark calm under pressure, Salah latched onto a loose ball in the box and finished confidently to make it 2–1, sending Egyptian supporters into celebration. The goal highlighted his importance to the team and his ability to produce when it matters most.

Zimbabwe pushed forward in the closing stages in search of another equalizer, but Egypt’s defense remained organised, and El Shenawy ensured there would be no late drama. At the final whistle, Egypt had secured all three points from a challenging opening fixture.

While Egypt will be pleased with their resilience and attacking dominance, Zimbabwe can take encouragement from a disciplined display that tested one of Africa’s strongest sides.

As AFCON 2025 progresses, Egypt’s comeback victory—and Salah’s decisive contribution—may prove to be a defining moment in their tournament journey.
