Eight Hostages Freed After 15 Months In Gaza Amid Chaotic Scenes.

Eight hostages, including three Israelis and five Thai nationals, have returned to Israel after being held captive in Gaza for over 15 months. Their release, which took place in Khan Younis, was marked by chaotic scenes, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express deep concern over the situation.

One of the freed hostages, Arbel Yehud, was seen being led through a crowd by masked gunmen before being handed over. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that seven of the hostages crossed into Israel under military escort, while the eighth, Agam Berger, had already been released separately earlier in the day.

The released Thai nationals were identified as Pongsak Thaenna, Sathian Suwannakham, Watchara Sriaoun, Bannawat Seathao, and Surasak Lamnao. Thai officials are expected to receive them upon arrival.

In response to the exchange, Hamas announced that Israel was set to release 110 Palestinian prisoners. However, reports later emerged that Israel had suspended this release due to the unrest in Khan Younis. According to Reuters, buses carrying the Palestinian detainees were instructed to return to prison, delaying their expected freedom.

Meanwhile, the families of the freed hostages expressed immense relief. Wiwwaeo Sriaoun, mother of Thai hostage Watchara Sriaoun, was overwhelmed with joy upon receiving confirmation of her son’s release. “It is confirmed, my son did not die. Thank you, God,” she said.

This marks the third hostage release since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on 19 January. However, tensions remain high, and the situation surrounding further exchanges remains uncertain.
