Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for investigation.
Emefiele had recently been released from detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) when he was apprehended by EFCC operatives less than an hour after regaining his freedom.
Sources have disclosed that the EFCC is scrutinizing Emefiele for alleged financial impropriety during his tenure as the head of the central bank. Fresh charges may also be filed against him.
The spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, was unavailable for official confirmation at the time of reporting.
Recall tht Emefiele had been in DSS custody since June after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
He was subsequently asked to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the then Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate at the apex bank.
In a separate incident, Emefiele had faced charges of “illegal possession” of firearms, which were later withdrawn by the Federal Government.
However, a new 20-count charge was instituted against him, accusing him of conspiracy to commit procurement fraud, among other offenses.
The arraignment has been postponed twice, and Emefiele reportedly proposed a plea bargain agreement that included his resignation as CBN governor and the surrender of certain assets.
On September 22, Emefiele officially resigned as CBN governor, and Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as the new governor of the central bank.
