England Edge-out Switzerland In A Dramatic Shootout Victory

England Secure Euro 2024 Semi-Final Spot with Dramatic Penalty Shootout Win Over Switzerland.

England’s quest for their first major tournament victory in 58 years remains alive after a thrilling late comeback led them to a 5-3 victory on penalties against Switzerland. This win secured their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals. The match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford emerging as the hero by saving Switzerland’s first penalty from Manuel Akanji.

England’s penalty takers, including Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all converted their shots, setting up a semi-final clash with either Turkey or the Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday.

England needed a last-minute equaliser from Bellingham in their previous round against Slovakia, and once again found themselves on the brink of defeat with ten minutes to go. The match had been uneventful until Breel Embolo scored for Switzerland in the 75th minute, but Saka quickly responded with a stunning strike from outside the box, levelling the score with England’s first shot on target.

Akanji’s missed penalty ultimately sealed Switzerland’s fate, continuing their unfortunate record in major tournament quarter-finals, having now lost five without ever reaching a semi-final.

Despite another underwhelming performance from Gareth Southgate’s men, England progressed. Southgate, in his 100th match as manager, opted for a back three, bringing in Ezri Konsa for his first competitive international start in place of the suspended Marc Guehi.

Saka remained on the right, proving to be a key decision as he was the standout player in the first half, consistently outmanoeuvring Michel Aebischer and creating the best chance before half-time. The second half continued at a slow pace until Embolo finally managed the first shot on goal, easily handled by Pickford.

As the match went into extra time, Switzerland’s Yann Sommer made a brilliant save to deny Declan Rice, while Harry Kane was forced off with an injury. Switzerland came closest to scoring with Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner hitting the woodwork and Pickford making a crucial save from Zeki Amdouni.

England, having previously struggled in penalty shootouts at the Euros, were flawless this time, with Saka redeeming himself after his missed penalty in the Euro 2020 final, ensuring England’s march into the semi-finals.

England’s resolve and determination were on full display, and their fans will hope this momentum carries them through to the final, bringing an end to their long wait for major tournament glory.
