Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola delivered a remarkable performance, setting a new course record, while Kenya’s Hellen Obiri secured the women’s race victory.
Tamirat Tola, the reigning 2022 world champion from Ethiopia, established his dominance by breaking away from the men’s pack at Mile 20, achieving a remarkable course record time of 2:04:58.
This victory marked his first-ever Marathon Major win. Tola spent much of the final six miles running independently, showcasing his strength and determination.
On the women’s side, Hellen Obiri of Kenya emerged as the victor in a competitive field.
In the final stretch inside Manhattan’s Central Park, Obiri made a decisive move, surpassing Letesenbet Gidey and 2022 NYC champion Sharon Lokedi to claim the win.
Obiri finished with a time of 2:27:23, adding to her previous triumph at the Boston Marathon earlier in the year
. Remarkably, this was only her third career marathon, as she made her marathon debut in New York just a year ago.
Reflecting on her victory, Hellen Obiri expressed her satisfaction, saying, “Finally, I did it. I told myself, ‘Let me be patient until we reach Central Park and see what happens at the end.'”
Tamirat Tola also shared his sentiments, stating, “This is my first Major win, [so] this is very, very important for me.
After withdrawing from the world championships in Budapest this year due to stomach issues, I am very grateful for this victory and for all the support I received during the race.”
