EURO 2024 Final: Quick Facts and Preview.

As anticipation builds for the EURO 2024 final, football enthusiasts around the world are gearing up for a thrilling encounter between Spain and England. Govima Sports bring you some key facts and insights ahead of the showdown:

SPAIN’S RICH HISTORY IN THE EUROS

Spain will be competing in their fifth EURO final, having previously won the tournament in 1964, 2008, and 2012.

Spain has an impressive record, having won all six games in the 2024 tournament. A win in the final would make them the first team to win seven consecutive matches in the Euros and secure a record fourth European Championship title.

      ENGLAND’S QUEST FOR GLORY

England will play their second consecutive EURO final after narrowly missing out on the trophy in 2020, losing to Italy on penalties.

This marks England’s first senior final (World Cup/Euros) outside of their home soil, aside from the men’s Olympic football events.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

World Cup Titles: Both nations have one World Cup title each – Spain in 2010 and England in 1966.

Olympic Success: Spain has one men’s Olympic football gold from 1992. England, competing as Great Britain, has three Olympic titles (1900, 1908, and 1912), sharing the record for the most men’s Olympic football victories with Hungary.

    SPAIN’S DOMINANCE IN FINALS

Since 2001, Spanish teams have played in 23 major finals (World Cup, Euros, Champions League, Europa League), winning 22 of them. The only exception was the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup final, which they lost to Brazil.

ROAD TO THE FINAL

Spain’s Journey: Spain has defeated notable teams, including former champions Italy, host Germany, and France, as well as Croatia, Albania, and Georgia, all within 90 minutes.

England’s Path: England’s route to the final involved victories over Serbia, a draw with Denmark and Slovenia, a dramatic extra-time win against Slovakia, a penalty shootout win over Switzerland, and a win against the Netherlands.

              UNDERDOG VS. FAVOURITE

Historic Underdog Triumphs: The Euros have seen underdog victories in 1988 (Netherlands), 1992 (Denmark), 2004 (Greece), and 2016 (Portugal).

Current Matchup: Spain enters Sunday’s final as the favourites, with England positioned as the underdogs. The question remains: can England overcome the odds and clinch the title?

     MATCH DETAILS

Kick-off:  The final will take place at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany, with kick-off at 07:00pm GMT (08:00pm Spanish and Nigerian time).

As fans eagerly await the clash, the stage is set for a memorable final. Will Spain continue their dominance, or can England defy the odds and secure their first EURO title? The football world watches in anticipation.
