Euro 2024: Germany Ran Riot Against Scotland, Setting The Stage With A 5:1 Opening Day Victory

Scotland Suffer Heavy Defeat Against Germany in Euro 2024 Opener

Scotland endured a dismal start to their Euro 2024 campaign, succumbing to a rampant Germany in Munich. Steve Clarke’s side, reduced to 10 men just before halftime were overwhelmed by a dominant German performance at the Allianz Arena.

The match’s tone was set early on, with Florian Wirtz opening the scoring after just 10 minutes. Jamal Musiala doubled the lead nine minutes later with a ferocious strike that left Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn and the mass of Scottish fans stunned.

Scotland’s woes deepened before half-time when Ryan Porteous received a red card, and Kai Havertz converted the resulting penalty to make it 3-0. Substitute Niclas Füllkrug added a fourth for Germany in the second half, while Antonio Rüdiger’s own goal offered Scotland a brief moment of joy. However, Emre Can’s late goal sealed a comprehensive 5-1 victory for the hosts.

Germany’s early dominance was evident through Wirtz’s goal, which capped off a period of sustained pressure and territorial control. Musiala and Füllkrug’s strikes further highlighted Germany’s confidence and attacking prowess. Toni Kroos, returning to the team, orchestrated play from midfield with his characteristic precision.

The statistics underscored Germany’s superiority, with a 94% passing accuracy, 43 attacks, 19 attempts, and 655 completed passes compared to Scotland’s 193. Germany also covered 9km more than their beleaguered opponents, showcasing their physical and tactical dominance.

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann praised his team’s performance, particularly in the opening 20 minutes. “We were brilliant in the first 20 minutes. We conceded, but it’s a good sign that our players complained about conceding. I was kind of surprised that Scotland weren’t that aggressive in the first 20 minutes. I think they were surprised by our ball possession; it was very concentrated.”

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. “Germany were outstanding; we couldn’t match them. Defensively, we weren’t very good, and on the ball, we weren’t very good. The first half ran away from us very quickly; we didn’t give ourselves a foothold. Now it’s all about reaction, so let’s see how they react. Four points is the target. We didn’t get any tonight, so it’s still the target from the next two games.”

Scotland will need to regroup quickly as they aim to secure four points from their remaining group stage matches to keep their Euro 2024 hopes alive.
