Euro 2024: Mixed Feelings For France After A Narrow Victory Against Austria

Mbappe’s Magic and Misfortune: France Start Euro 2024 with a Win.

Kylian Mbappe produced a moment of brilliance—and experienced a stroke of good fortune—to ensure France’s Euro 2024 campaign began with a victory over a resilient Austria in Düsseldorf. However, the night ended on a concerning note as he suffered a late injury.

France’s captain and Real Madrid’s newest “Galactico” was substituted in the 90th minute after sustaining a painful blow to his nose in an aerial clash with Austria defender Kevin Danso, leaving him covered in blood. To add to the drama, Mbappe received a yellow card for returning to the field before collapsing and exiting the pitch once more.

Despite a mixed performance in front of goal, Mbappe’s decisive contribution secured three crucial points against Ralf Rangnick’s well-organised Austrian side. The 25-year-old showcased his lightning pace and quick footwork, leaving Austria full-back Phillipp Mwene behind before his cross was deflected into the net by Leeds United centre-back Max Wober’s header seven minutes before half-time.

Austria had their best chance moments earlier, but Christoph Baumgartner’s close-range shot was blocked by France keeper Mike Maignan’s feet. Their frustration was compounded by Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano’s incorrect decision to award a goal kick instead of a corner.

Mbappe, who had an earlier shot well saved by Austria keeper Patrick Pentz, missed a golden opportunity in the second half. After racing past Wober with astonishing speed, he shot wide with the goal at his mercy, holding his head in disbelief.

While France were not at their best, veteran N’Golo Kante delivered a magnificent individual performance on his return to international football after a two-year absence. This effort was enough to overcome a determined Austria and set the stage for France’s key Group D match against old rivals the Netherlands on Friday.
