Favour Ofili Misses Out on 100m at Paris Olympics Due to AFN Registration Oversight.
National women’s champion Favour Ofili has announced that she will not be competing in the women’s 100 metres at the Paris Olympics due to an administrative oversight by the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN). The 22-year-old sprinter shared this disappointing news via her Instagram page on Tuesday.
Despite qualifying for the Olympic event by winning the national title in April, Ofili revealed that she was not registered to represent Nigeria in the race.
Expressing her frustration, she wrote: “It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 metres at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter my name. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what? To not be entered and compete at the Olympic Games because the responsible organisation failed to enter me?”
Ofili, who is also a student at Louisiana State University (LSU), accused the NOC and AFN of taking the opportunity away from her, adding that “neither organisation can ever be trusted in the future.”
This development comes as a significant setback for the young sprinter, who had been preparing rigorously for the event. The failure to register her not only affects her Olympic dreams but also highlights issues within the administrative bodies responsible for supporting and promoting Nigerian athletes.
