FEC Approves N142bn For Construction Of Ultra-Modern Bus Terminals In Six States.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Tinubu, has approved ₦142.02 billion for the construction of ultra-modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, marking a significant step toward improving the nation’s transport infrastructure. The announcement, made by the Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, following the FEC meeting on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety, passenger comfort, and economic activity.
The bus terminals, to be constructed by Messrs Planet Project Limited, will be located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu, Edo State (South-South). Alkali described the initiative as the “first direct federal government investment” in road transport infrastructure beyond road construction, addressing a critical gap in Nigeria’s transportation network. “Despite the vital role road transport plays, there are virtually no purpose-built bus terminals to serve millions of commuters adequately,” he said.

The minister highlighted the broader implications of the project, noting that the absence of modern terminals has contributed to increased crime rates, road traffic accidents, and the proliferation of arms along major highways. The new terminals are designed to promote safety, streamline commuter movement, and stimulate economic growth in the host regions. Facilities will include passenger waiting areas, ticketing offices, eateries, and other conveniences to enhance the travel experience.
The approval comes as part of President Tinubu’s broader economic agenda, which includes a recent directive to review revenue deductions by agencies like the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). The bus terminal project aligns with efforts to boost public investment, with the administration targeting a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Posts on X reflect public optimism, with users describing the initiative as a transformative move to modernise Nigeria’s transport sector and improve commuter safety.
The FEC’s decision builds on recent transportation achievements, such as the commissioning of the Mabushi Bus Terminal in the Federal Capital Territory, praised by Tinubu as a historic investment in public transport. The new terminals, expected to be completed within 15 months, are anticipated to create jobs, reduce travel-related risks, and foster economic activity by providing modern, secure hubs for millions of commuters.
As Nigeria pushes for infrastructure-led growth, this ₦142 billion investment signals a commitment to addressing long-standing challenges in the transport sector. With strategic locations chosen for their commercial viability, the terminals are poised to enhance connectivity and support the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on economic development and public welfare.
