The National Road Safety Advisory Council (NARSAC), has been inaugurated by Vice-President Kashim Shettima. The body is saddled with setting strategic targets for road safety nationwide.
In a statement on Friday, the special assistant to the president on media and communications, Stanley Nkwocha, made this known.
Shettima urged the council to ensure effective coordination between federal, state and local governments to achieve shared road safety goals.
He stressed that road safety is not just a policy matter but a vital part of the nation’s lifeline and connecting its people.
The vice-president also praised the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), for its commitment, noting that the agency has played a key role in addressing Nigeria’s road traffic challenges.
“The establishment of NARSAC aligns with recommendations from the World Bank’s Country Capacity Review, which highlighted areas for improvement in Nigeria’s road traffic management,” he added.
Shettima encouraged Shehu Mohammed, the FRSC corps marshal, to adopt these recommendations as a foundation for much-needed reforms.
He also commended the coordination between federal and state executives, as well as other government agencies.
As chair of NARSAC, Shettima will work with six governors representing the country’s six geopolitical zones, and ministers from transportation, works, health, justice, education, finance and other key ministries.
Other members include the national security adviser, the president of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
