Federal Government Seeks Qualified Candidates For UN Humanitarian Leadership Roles

Opportunity open to UN and non-UN professionals with proven humanitarian leadership experience

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FG), has officially invited qualified professionals to apply for leadership positions within the United Nations Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator (RC/HC), Talent Pipeline — a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening global humanitarian leadership capacity and diversifying the pool of eligible candidates.

What Is the RC/HC Talent Pipeline?

The Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator Talent Pipeline is a joint initiative managed by the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO), and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). It seeks to identify, groom, and prepare high-calibre professionals for senior leadership roles in the UN humanitarian system. Prospective candidates in the pipeline receive tailored opportunities to develop competencies across humanitarian coordination, development, peacebuilding, and operational leadership.

Key features of the RC/HC Talent Pipeline:
  • It broadens leadership recruitment for UN humanitarian and coordination roles.

  • It promotes diversity, gender balance, and geographic representation in global leadership.

  • Inclusion in the pipeline is preparatory, not a guaranteed appointment — candidates still must meet further UN selection requirements later.

Federal Government’s Role and Call to Action

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government encouraged experienced and committed professionals — both within and outside the UN system — to apply for the Talent Pipeline before the deadline.

The statement underscored that:
  • The initiative targets “high-calibre professionals” with leadership capacity and dedication to multilateral cooperation, humanitarian action, and sustainable development.

  • While UN staff require formal government nomination, non-UN professionals can apply directly — opening the door to broader participation including citizens of Nigeria and other countries.

This call reflects a wider push by the FG to strengthen Nigeria’s engagement in global humanitarian leadership and multilateral cooperation frameworks.

Deadline & Application Details

According to official information:
  • The call for expressions of interest closes on Thursday, 12 February 2026 at 23:59 (EST).

  • Applications must be submitted through the official UN portal as outlined in the UN’s Talent Pipeline guidance.

Prospective candidates should carefully review eligibility criteria and required documentation before applying, as detailed on the UN’s official talent pipeline web page.

Who Can Apply?

The Talent Pipeline seeks candidates who reflect the UN’s leadership profile, including:
  • A strong record in humanitarian, development, or related fields;

  • Demonstrated values such as inclusion, integrity, humility, and humanity;

  • Experience in senior coordination, policy, or operational roles; and

  • A commitment to building multilateral solutions to global challenges.

Both UN personnel (with government endorsement), and external professionals (without nomination), are eligible, broadening access to this platform for leadership development in global humanitarian governance.

Why This Matters

The call comes at a time when the world faces intensifying humanitarian needs — driven by conflict, displacement, climate change, and complex emergencies. Leadership roles within the UN system, such as Resident and Humanitarian Coordinators, play a critical role in:

  • Coordinating multi-agency responses;

  • Supporting government-UN cooperation in crisis-affected settings;

  • Aligning humanitarian action with sustainable development goals.

For Nigeria — a country deeply engaged with humanitarian challenges and multilateral partnerships — this initiative provides an avenue to elevate national expertise to the global stage and influence strategic humanitarian policy and action worldwide.

The Ministry explained that while serving United Nations personnel are required to secure formal nominations from their respective governments, professionals outside the UN system may apply directly without the need for prior nomination.

Members of the public who possess the relevant experience and demonstrate a strong commitment to humanitarian service are encouraged to apply.

“We urge all qualified professionals with proven leadership capacity and a commitment to multilateral cooperation, humanitarian action, and sustainable development to submit their applications within the specified deadline,” the statement said.

Additional details on eligibility criteria, application guidelines, and the structure of the Talent Pipeline can be found on the official United Nations website at unsdg.un.org/2030-agenda/leadership/resident-coordinator-humanitarian-coordinator-rchc-talent-pipeline.

Broader Context

Nigeria’s collaboration with the UN extends beyond this call. The country and the UN recently reaffirmed joint humanitarian strategies, including cooperation frameworks and shared plans to respond to displacement, poverty, and development challenges. These efforts reflect Nigeria’s ongoing engagement with the UN system to address both humanitarian emergencies and long-term development goals.
