The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced plans to enhance security measures on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and solar lights.
This initiative aims to monitor and deter the activities of illegal miners who have been causing damage to the infrastructure.
Umahi made this declaration during a routine inspection of several bridge projects in Lagos, including the Iddo Bridge, Carter Bridge, and the Third Mainland Bridge. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of work by Berger, the contractor responsible for these projects.
“We have observed the commendable pace of work on the Iddo Bridge, Carter Bridge, and Third Mainland Bridge undertaken by Berger,” Umahi stated. “We are committed to accelerating the progress, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming lagoon tide in June.”
Highlighting the ongoing efforts beneath the bridge deck, Umahi emphasized the need to address the condition of the piles supporting the Third Mainland Bridge. He attributed damage to erosion and illegal mining and announced plans to engage a consultant for repairs.
“We are taking proactive measures to address the erosion and illegal mining that have damaged the piles supporting the Third Mainland Bridge,” Umahi explained. “Consultants will be enlisted to assess the situation and propose necessary repairs.”
Umahi also outlined plans to extend similar security enhancements to other bridges in Lagos and across the country, citing budgetary provisions and the imperative to address infrastructure challenges nationwide.
“The installation of CCTV cameras and solar lights on the Third Mainland Bridge will be completed by June 2024,” Umahi affirmed. “Similar measures will be considered for Carter Bridge and other bridges in Lagos, as well as critical infrastructure projects nationwide.”
