The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched an economic empowerment program for 10 million women, aiming to achieve its ambitious one trillion dollar economy goal.
Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, disclosed this at a high-level sideline event of the 2025 United Nations General Assembly in New York, U.S.A.
The program focuses on economic development, providing women with access to livelihood grants, formal financial institutions, national ID, and health insurance schemes. One of the key vehicles being utilized for the empowerment is the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP), which is currently the nation’s most significant women’s economic empowerment platform.
The project has mobilized over 460,000 women into Women Affinity Groups (WAGs) across multiple states, with collective savings of over N4.9 billion. This initiative has already shown significant impact, with over 330,000 women accessing livelihood grants and thousands linked to formal financial institutions, national ID, and health insurance.
The Renewed Hope Social Impact Interventions, another component of the program, is envisioned as a transformative, gender-responsive initiative that will directly impact over 50 million women, children, families, and vulnerable persons across all 774 Local Government Areas of the Federation. The economic empowerment program is being implemented in collaboration with the World Bank and other partners, with commitments from 32 states overall.
