FG Launches National Initiative To Boost Wheat Production And Food Security.

The Federal Government has unveiled a transformative initiative aimed at increasing Nigeria’s wheat production, reinforcing food security, and reducing reliance on imported wheat. The programme, launched under the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), is set to benefit 16 wheat-producing states across the country.

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, announced the initiative in Abuja, highlighting its potential to enhance agricultural productivity and stimulate economic growth.

Speaking during a briefing, National Project Coordinator Ishaku Buba outlined the programme’s target of supporting 280,000 smallholder farmers alongside medium-scale farmers in designated clusters. Farmers will contribute resources to cover inputs for one hectare of irrigated land, with tailored fertiliser packages provided. Most participants will receive 50kg of Urea and 100kg of NPK fertiliser, while Jigawa State farmers will benefit from additional inputs due to specific soil nutrient needs and the state government’s commitment to increasing wheat production.

The initiative also includes financial incentives, offering 25% subsidies on certified wheat seeds and 50% subsidies on fertilisers to reduce production costs for farmers. To ensure efficient distribution, 409 redemption centres have been established, with 281 already operational, serving 68,389 farmers—approximately 24.42% of the target.

The programme’s input distribution phase is scheduled to conclude later this month to align with the wheat planting calendar. Enhanced security measures, supported by personnel from the Police, DSS, and NSCDC, are in place at redemption centres to maintain smooth operations.

In his remarks, Mr Edun praised the project team for their dedication, emphasising the scheme’s potential to bolster food security, empower rural economies, and significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported wheat.

With this innovative approach, Nigeria is on course to achieve substantial progress in wheat production, contributing to a more food-secure and economically robust nation.
