FG To Establish Smart Police Stations Across Nigeria In Major Security Overhaul

FG To Establish Smart Police Stations Across Nigeria In Major Security Overhaul.

In a transformative move to bolster national security and modernise law enforcement, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish state-of-the-art smart police stations nationwide. This ambitious initiative, driven by a strategic partnership between Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), aims to integrate cutting-edge digital infrastructure into the country’s policing system, enhancing operational efficiency and community safety.

The announcement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GBB and the NPTF in Abuja, marking a significant step towards achieving President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for a safer and more secure Nigeria. The initiative is designed to address longstanding challenges in policing, including slow incident response times, inadequate data collection, and limited connectivity between police stations.

A Leap Towards 21st-Century Policing

Under the terms of the agreement, GBB will provide high-speed fibre connectivity, cloud platforms, and advanced ICT tools to equip smart police stations across the country. These modern facilities will feature CCTV-enabled surveillance, solar-powered inverter systems, and digitalised systems for data collection and statement recording, moving away from outdated paper-based processes. The stations are expected to enhance real-time communication, intelligence gathering, and operational coordination within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director of GBB, described the partnership as a “bold step forward” in Nigeria’s digital transformation and security improvement. “Our collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund brings cutting-edge technology into the heart of Nigeria’s security architecture,” he said, highlighting the potential to address critical security and digital development challenges.

Mohammed Sheidu, Executive Secretary of the NPTF, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the project’s role in propelling the NPF to 21st-century standards. “This initiative will digitalise police stations nationwide, introducing systems for collecting and sorting data and connecting stations to one another. It is a step towards fostering better police-community relations and improving the working conditions of our officers,” Sheidu stated.

Recent Milestones in Smart Policing

The Federal Government has already made significant strides in this direction. In May 2025, a smart police station was commissioned in Katampe, Abuja, constructed by the NPTF and handed over to the NPF. The facility, equipped with advanced technology and designed to enhance law enforcement efficiency, has been hailed as a model for future stations. Similarly, smart divisional headquarters have been inaugurated in Akaeze, Ebonyi State, and Ekirin Ade, Kogi State, showcasing the government’s commitment to grassroots security.

These stations are not merely buildings but symbols of a modern, responsive policing system. Features such as solar-powered systems, CCTV surveillance, and landscaped grounds with dedicated parking areas are designed to improve operational capabilities and foster public trust. “This headquarters is a foundation for safer communities and a more resilient Nigeria,” Sheidu noted during the commissioning of the Kogi facility.

Addressing Security Challenges

The establishment of smart police stations comes at a critical time as Nigeria grapples with various security challenges, including communal conflicts, insurgencies, and violent crimes. The initiative is expected to streamline information sharing, improve incident response times, and enhance transparency across police operations. By addressing issues such as data collection and connectivity, the project aims to tackle one of the NPF’s major hurdles: the lack of robust intelligence-gathering systems.

The Federal Government’s commitment to this initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the NPF’s capacity. Under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the force has recorded significant successes, including the arrest of over 30,000 suspects and the recovery of nearly 2,000 firearms, alongside infrastructure upgrades such as the Nigerian Police Resource Centre in Jabi, Abuja.

Challenges and Calls for Accountability

While the smart police stations initiative has been widely praised, it comes amid concerns about systemic issues within the NPF. The House of Representatives recently launched an investigation into allegations of corruption, contract fraud, and illegal asset sales within the force, urging greater transparency and accountability. The success of the smart policing project will depend on ensuring that resources are managed effectively and that officers uphold professionalism in these new facilities.

A Vision for a Safer Nigeria

The rollout of smart police stations represents a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey towards a modernised, technology-driven security framework. By leveraging digital infrastructure and fostering strategic partnerships, the Federal Government is laying the groundwork for a more efficient and community-focused police force. As the initiative expands to more states, it holds the promise of transforming policing in Nigeria, fostering safer communities, and rebuilding public trust in law enforcement.
