FG Unveils 2025 Zuma International Film Festival

The Federal Government has officially announced the 2025 edition of the Zuma International Film Festival (ZIFF), reaffirming its commitment to promoting Nigeria’s creative industry and positioning it as a global force in storytelling and cultural diplomacy.

The event, which will run from December 1 to 5, 2025, in Abuja, will be held under the theme “Storytelling for Global Influence: Film as a Soft Power and Economic Force.”

Speaking during the announcement, the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, said the film festival reflects the government’s vision to empower young creators, boost job opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria’s global cultural footprint. She described the creative industry as a vital driver of national growth, commending President Bola Tinubu for his continued support in advancing the arts and creative economy.

Dr. Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), revealed that the 2025 festival had already attracted over 3,000 film entries from more than 15 countries, including India, the United States, Egypt, China, and South Africa. According to him, the growing participation shows that ZIFF has become a significant international platform for creative collaboration and cultural exchange.

The NFC boss also listed some of the major activities lined up for the five-day festival, such as the NFC Annual Film Lecture, Emerging Talent Showcase, Film Trade and Finance Forum, Co-Production and Pitching Sessions, daily film screenings, and the grand Zuma Awards Gala. These events, he said, are designed to foster creativity, investment, and innovation in the Nigerian film industry.

Dr. Nuhu further explained that beyond screenings and awards, the corporation is working to expand its regional presence and strengthen partnerships with international organizations in film archiving and digital innovation. He expressed optimism that the initiative would position Nigeria as the hub of African cinema.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Nuhu cited an African proverb, saying, “Until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter.” He added that the 2025 Zuma Film Festival will ensure Nigerian storytellers continue to tell their own stories using the power of film.
