FIFA Introduces New Peace Prize To Be Presented At World Cup Draw In Washington

FIFA has announced the launch of a new annual award known as the FIFA Peace Prize which aims to promote unity and recognise individuals who have made remarkable contributions towards global peace.

The first edition of the award is scheduled to be presented during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington in December. According to the football body, the initiative aligns with its long standing campaign tagged Football Unites The World.

The inaugural award ceremony will take place on December 5 at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D C. The event will form part of the activities lined up ahead of the World Cup draw where all 48 participating countries will discover their group stage opponents. The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States Canada and Mexico and will feature 104 matches across 16 cities.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino explained that the new peace award was necessary at a time when the world is experiencing division and conflicts. He stated that the honour seeks to appreciate those who have worked towards peace and unity across nations. Infantino said “In an increasingly unsettled and divided world it’s fundamental to recognise the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace.”

He added that football remains a powerful tool for unity and positive change. “Football stands for peace and on behalf of the entire global football community the FIFA Peace Prize will recognise the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people bringing hope for future generations” the FIFA President noted. The award is expected to become an annual highlight on FIFA’s calendar.

The announcement of the FIFA Peace Prize comes months after former United States President Donald Trump lobbied for the Nobel Peace Prize although it was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado instead. Trump had earlier confirmed that Washington would host the World Cup draw further raising expectations ahead of the ceremony. His interest in the global football scene has fuelled speculations about potential nominees for the new prize.

Football stakeholders across the globe have welcomed the introduction of the award describing it as a step towards promoting the core values of the game. Many believe that the initiative will encourage influential leaders and peace advocates to use sports as a tool for social impact and conflict resolution. The award ceremony is expected to draw global attention as FIFA honours individuals who have demonstrated commitment to peace building efforts.
