Fiorentina Left Heart-Broken At The Death By Ayoub El Kaabi, Whose Late Strike Gave Olympiakos Victory In Conference League Final

Ayoub El Kaabi Secures Historic Europa Conference League Victory for Olympiakos.

Ayoub El Kaabi’s dramatic goal in the final minutes of extra time secured Olympiakos a historic 1-0 victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final, making them the first Greek club to win a European trophy.

The Moroccan striker, who has been pivotal throughout Olympiakos’ campaign, headed in a precise cross from Santiago Hezze just four minutes before the end of extra time. The goal, confirmed after a lengthy VAR check, was El Kaabi’s 11th of the competition and ignited celebrations in the AEK Arena in Athens.

This triumph marks a momentous achievement for Greek football, with Olympiakos becoming only the second Greek team to reach a European final, and the first to win. The previous instance was Panathinaikos’ appearance in the 1971 European Cup final, where they were defeated by Ajax.

The victory was a bitter blow for Fiorentina, who suffered heartbreak in consecutive finals, having lost to West Ham in last year’s Europa Conference League final.

Olympiakos began the match with high intensity, buoyed by their fervent supporters who had traveled from Piraeus to Athens. Despite a lively first half, clear scoring opportunities were scarce for both sides. Early on, Olympiakos’ on-loan Wolves midfielder Daniel Podence forced Fiorentina’s goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano into a crucial save. Fiorentina’s best chance in the first half saw Giacomo Bonaventura’s effort comfortably saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis.

In the second half, Fiorentina created a promising move when right-back Dodo surged forward and found Christian Kouame in the box, but Kouame’s poor contact allowed Tzolakis to clear the danger.

As extra time progressed, it seemed both teams were gearing up for a penalty shootout. However, Olympiakos’ persistence paid off when El Kaabi capitalized on a late attack to secure his place in Olympiakos folklore and bring joy to Greek football fans.

El Kaabi, who had already made headlines with five goals in the semi-finals against Aston Villa, rose to the occasion once more. His career journey from Morocco to China, Turkey, Qatar, and now Greece has culminated in this unforgettable moment for Olympiakos.

This victory not only ends Olympiakos’ European trophy drought but also elevates Greek football on the continental stage.
