Fire Outbreak At Borno IDP Camp Claims Life Of Young Boy, Destroys Shelters.
A fire outbreak at the Munna Albadawi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State has resulted in the tragic death of a seven-year-old boy, Abubakar Gargar, and the destruction of ten makeshift shelters.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of March 20, 2025, engulfed foodstuffs, clothing, and other personal belongings of the camp’s residents. According to the camp chairman, Babangida Mahmud, the fire started around 3:00 a.m., spreading rapidly and causing significant damage. The total value of losses is yet to be determined.
The Borno State Fire Service, with support from security agencies, managed to contain the blaze, but not before extensive destruction had taken place. Tragically, Abubakar Gargar could not escape the inferno. His remains were recovered and handed over to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
In response to the disaster, officials from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other humanitarian organisations have been deployed to assess the extent of the damage and provide necessary relief to affected residents.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, while efforts are underway to support those who have lost their homes and belongings in the tragic incident.
