Flamingos Soar To Victory In Pretoria: South Africa 1-3 Nigeria.

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, affectionately known as the Flamingos, delivered a commanding performance in Pretoria today, securing a 3-1 victory over South Africa in the first leg of their latest encounter. The result gives the young Super Falcons a strong advantage heading into the second leg next week.

 

The match, held at a vibrant stadium in the South African capital, showcased Nigeria’s attacking prowess and resilience. Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring in the 20th minute, firing home a clinical finish to set the tone for the Flamingos’ dominance. Just before the break, Chidi Harmony doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 41st minute, sending the Nigerian supporters into raptures.





 

South Africa fought back valiantly after the interval, with Malebana converting a penalty in the 47th minute to halve the deficit and ignite hopes of a comeback. However, the Flamingos refused to be rattled. Chidi Harmony struck again in the 68th minute, notching her second goal of the afternoon with a composed finish that silenced the home crowd and restored Nigeria’s two-goal cushion.

 

The 3-1 scoreline reflects Nigeria’s control throughout much of the contest, blending flair with discipline to outclass their hosts. The Flamingos’ ability to capitalise on key moments—two well-taken goals in the first half and a decisive response after South Africa’s resurgence—underscored their maturity beyond their years.

 

Speaking after the final whistle, the mood in the Nigerian camp was one of quiet confidence. With the second leg looming on home soil, the Flamingos are well-positioned to seal the tie. South Africa, meanwhile, will need a monumental effort to overturn the deficit when they travel to Nigeria next week.
