Flood Looms As Kainji Jebba Shiroro Zungeru Dams Get Set To Discharge Excess Water

The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency has issued a fresh warning about potential flooding as four major dams prepare to release excess water.

The dams identified are Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro and Zungeru, which are expected to discharge to prevent structural damage.

The Director General of NIHSA, Clement Nze, said, “The release of water from these dams is a necessary measure to safeguard the facilities, but it will increase the risk of flooding downstream.”

He explained that communities located along the River Niger and River Kaduna plains are most vulnerable. According to him, “Residents must take early precautions, especially those in low-lying areas, to avoid loss of lives and property.”

The agency stressed that the release is a controlled operation and should not be interpreted as an emergency failure. However, it noted that the combined impact of rainfall and dam discharge could raise water levels significantly.

State governments have been urged to activate emergency response plans. “We are calling on state authorities to open relief centers and sensitize communities on evacuation procedures,” Nze stated.

Experts at the agency further warned that the situation could worsen if heavy rains persist in the coming weeks, urging Nigerians to remain alert and prepared.
