Nigeria’s Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubairu has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Egyptian second division club Telecom SC.

The experienced tactician was unveiled at the club’s headquarters in Cairo after signing a two year contract, marking a new phase in his coaching career. Reports described the move as a significant step, as he becomes one of the few Nigerian coaches currently managing outside the country.

Zubairu’s appointment follows his recent achievements with Nigeria’s U20 team, where he successfully led the Flying Eagles to qualify for the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations and the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup scheduled to take place in Chile. His performance with the national youth team earned him praise for his tactical discipline, calm leadership, and ability to build competitive squads capable of delivering results.

Before taking up the new job, Zubairu built his reputation at club level in Nigeria. He guided El Kanemi Warriors to victory in the 2024 President’s Federation Cup, a moment that brought him national recognition. He has also handled several Nigeria Premier Football League sides including Wikki Tourists, Gombe United and Akwa United, gaining valuable experience that shaped his managerial style and approach to player development.

Telecom SC confirmed that Zubairu has been tasked with securing promotion to the Egyptian Premier League. The club expressed confidence in his capacity, stating that his background in youth development and his strong technical knowledge would help transform the team. “He is a coach with a proven track record and strong mentality. We believe he can lead us to a new level,” the club was quoted as saying.

Zubairu is also known for his emphasis on developing young talent, a quality that aligns with Telecom SC’s project. He is recognised for adopting a modern approach to football management, focusing on tactics, player psychology, and conditioning. “My philosophy is to build a team that plays with identity and discipline,” he previously said while highlighting his coaching values.

The Nigerian coach now begins a new chapter in Egyptian football, with expectations high that he will replicate his past successes. His move is also seen as a positive development for Nigerian coaching exports, as more local coaches attract opportunities beyond the country’s borders.
