Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello Arraigned Amid Heavy Security.
The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, appeared at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, on Wednesday, amid a heavy security presence. Arriving at the court around 8:50 am, Bello faced charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC accuses Bello of financial misconduct, including the alleged mismanagement of state funds, embezzlement, and abuse of office during his tenure as governor from 2016 to 2023. The charges follow ongoing investigations into his financial dealings.
According to reports, Bello was detained by the EFCC on Tuesday afternoon and spent the night in their custody while being interrogated by investigators. The Commission had earlier confirmed his detention and described the grilling process as part of its efforts to hold public officials accountable for alleged financial impropriety.
In November, the EFCC filed fresh charges against Bello, alleging a N110 billion fraud. This is in addition to the 19 earlier charges of money laundering involving over N80 billion, which also implicate Bello’s nephew, Ali Bello, and other co-defendants, including Dauda Suliman and Abdulsalam Hudu.
During a prior hearing, the court dismissed oral bail applications for Abdulsalam Hudu and Umar Oricho, two co-defendants in the case. The new charges, dated 25 September, further expand the scope of the EFCC’s case against the former governor and his associates.
The arraignment marks the beginning of a trial that could have significant implications for accountability in public service. The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to pursuing the case vigorously to ensure justice is served.
