Former Ondo Governor Akeredolu’s Body Returns To Nigeria

The lifeless body of the former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, who passed away on December 27, 2023, at the age of 67, arrived in Nigeria on Friday.

The somber occasion took place at the private wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, where the late governor’s widow, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, and other family members received the mortal remains.

Akeredolu, also known as “Aketi,” had been flown to Germany for medical attention as his health deteriorated. Upon arrival at the airport, the body was transferred to a private morgue, where it will be embalmed ahead of the funeral scheduled for the second week of February.

The late governor’s health battles began in June, leading to his medical treatment abroad. He returned to Nigeria in September but remained in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as his health continued to decline. Pressure mounted from opposition parties and activists for Akeredolu to resign or transfer power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in accordance with the 1999 constitution.

Aiyedatiwa was eventually sworn in as the new governor of Ondo State after Akeredolu transmitted power to him in early December before embarking on another medical leave to Germany.

The health challenges were not the only controversies in Akeredolu’s second term. A power struggle ensued within the state House of Assembly, with loyalists of the late governor and Aiyedatiwa at odds. The intervention of President Bola Tinubu was required to ease tensions and restore order.

Despite the controversies, Akeredolu, a devoted Christian known for his warm and accommodating nature, dedicated his life to legal practice, mentorship, and social service. In addition to a distinguished legal career, he actively participated in various associations, including the Oyo State Football Association and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Akeredolu’s legacy also extended to his role as a patron for multiple organizations, such as the Nigerian Law Society, Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, among others.

The late governor is survived by his wife, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, and their four children, along with numerous grandchildren. As Nigeria mourns the passing of a statesman, preparations are underway for a final farewell to a man whose life was intertwined with public service and dedication to his community.
