Fresh FM Ibadan Rallies Community Support After Devastating Fire.
Fresh FM, the popular radio station owned by renowned gospel musician Yinka Ayefele, was struck by a severe fire at its headquarters in the Challenge area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on the evening of 15 August 2025. Despite the significant damage, the station’s management and community response highlight a story of resilience and solidarity, with no loss of life reported, offering hope for recovery.
The blaze, which began around 7:30 pm, ravaged critical facilities, including the studios of Fresh 105.9 FM and Blast 98.3 FM, the newsroom, transmitter, and server room, disrupting live broadcasts. Samson Akindele, Group Head of Corporate Affairs for Fresh FM Nigeria and Yinka Ayefele Limited, confirmed the incident, noting that in-house fire extinguishers were insufficient against the inferno’s intensity. “We are saddened to inform the public that our head office was razed by a devastating fire,” he said, adding that the cause and full extent of the damage are still under investigation.
Local residents, passers-by, and Oyo State Fire Service personnel acted swiftly, working together to contain the blaze. Samuel Ibikunle, a station staff member, raised the alarm on social media, urging for urgent assistance: “Fresh FM is currently on fire! We need the Fire Service immediately.” His plea, widely shared, galvanised community support. The Oyo State Fire Service, led by Chairman Hon Maroof Akinwande, responded promptly, with Akinwande confirming their presence at the scene.
Ayefele, a celebrated figure in Nigeria’s gospel music scene, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support via a statement on social media, accompanied by emotional emojis. The management praised the “good-spirited Nigerians” who assisted, underscoring the station’s deep community ties. Fans and listeners rallied online, offering condolences and prayers for recovery. One supporter, Balofin Segun Oluwaseun, wrote, “God will replace the losses in hundredfold,” while Ezekiel Odunayo Ogunyinka added, “The God you serve will give you strength to overcome this.”
Fresh FM, a cornerstone of South-West Nigeria’s media landscape, has been a platform for local voices and music since its inception. This incident marks the second major setback for the station, following a controversial partial demolition of its Music House complex in 2018. Despite the loss of key equipment and facilities, the management remains optimistic, assuring stakeholders that updates on the investigation and rebuilding efforts will follow.
The community’s swift response and the absence of casualties provide a silver lining, with Fresh FM’s leadership committed to restoring operations. As investigations continue, the station’s legacy of resilience and its role as a cultural hub fuel hope for a swift recovery, supported by the solidarity of Ibadan’s residents and listeners across Nigeria.
