The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Owo Unit Command has called on all road users to take personal responsibility for their safety to prevent road traffic crashes during the ember month s and beyond.
The call comes as part of ongoing public enlightenment efforts by the FRSC to reduce accidents and fatalities on Nigerian roads.
At a road show held on Wednesday in Owo, Ondo State, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” Mr. Joseph Ajayi, the Unit Commander, emphasized that human factors such as speeding, fatigue, and distracted driving remain major contributors to road accidents. He urged motorists to prioritize their safety and that of other road users at all times.
Ajayi, also the Assistant Corps Commander for the state, explained that the campaign aligns with Goal 2 of the FRSC’s 2025 Corporate Strategy, which focuses on reducing crashes and promoting road safety nationwide. He noted that the ember months historically witness a spike in road incidents, making targeted awareness campaigns essential.
The event featured a motorcade with participants from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Special Marshals, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, Road Safety Clubs, and other road safety advocates. Participants distributed informative flyers, engaged motorists, and provided practical tips for safe driving practices.
The FRSC also highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring road safety. Ajayi urged commercial drivers, private motorists, and pedestrians to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, avoid distractions, and plan journeys carefully, particularly during peak travel periods in the ember months.
Ajayi concluded by reiterating the FRSC’s commitment to saving lives and fostering a culture of safety on Nigerian roads. He emphasized that public cooperation is crucial for achieving safer highways, and encouraged all road users to take proactive steps to protect themselves and others while on the roads.
