Commercial flight operations have officially commenced at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, following approval by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), for full-scale operations. The milestone marks a significant step in Ekiti State’s transportation and economic development agenda, fulfilling a long-held vision for enhanced connectivity and regional growth.

Inaugural Flight Marks Historic Moment

The inaugural flight, operated by United Nigerians Airlines, took off from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 10:30 AM on Wednesday morning and touched down at the Ekiti Airport at exactly 11:00 AM. The aircraft, registered 5B-BWY, carried a distinguished roster of dignitaries including:

  • Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)

  • Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senate Leader

  • Former Governors Ayodele Fayose, Niyi Adebayo, and Dr. Kayode Fayemi

  • Dr. Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation

  • All serving National Assembly members from Ekiti State

  • Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigerians Airlines

Upon arrival, the aircraft received a traditional water cannon salute from the airport fire service, a symbolic welcome that heralded the beginning of a new era in Ekiti’s aviation history.

Governor Oyebanji Hails Milestone

At the inauguration ceremony, Governor Biodun Oyebanji described the commencement of commercial flights at the airport as a major breakthrough in the state’s economic development drive. He emphasized that the first commercial flight represents the opening of a new chapter in Ekiti’s transportation infrastructure and a significant step toward achieving the state’s long-term vision of a prosperous economy.

The governor revealed that the state government had invested N49.7 billion directly into the project since its inception. He also acknowledged the generous contribution of Chief Afe Babalola, who donated navigation equipment worth $1.6 million and constructed a 100-car parking facility.

Governor Oyebanji further detailed the expenditures on critical infrastructure, including:

  • Completion of civil works

  • Installation of airfield lighting

  • Construction of the control tower and fire station

  • Meteorological station

  • Perimeter fencing

  • Check-in and baggage systems

  • Ongoing staff quarters

While acknowledging the pioneering efforts of his predecessors — Oni, Fayose, and Fayemi — for conceiving and initiating the project, he expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for federal support, which enabled the completion of the multi-billion-naira facility.

Construction Firm Hails Achievement

John Zhao, Executive Director of CCECC Nigeria Ltd, the company responsible for constructing the airport, described the commercial launch as a proud milestone for both the firm and Nigeria. Zhao highlighted that the transformation of the site from bare land into a fully functional aviation hub is proof of the impact of visionary leadership and collaborative efforts.

He referred to the airport as Ekiti’s “sky gateway”, capable of stimulating employment, logistics, tourism, global exports, and fresh investments in the service sector. Zhao added that the facility’s multiplier effect will enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and elevate the state’s standing as an emerging regional hub.

Airline Chairman on New Opportunities

Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigerians Airlines, hailed the commencement of full-scale service as a significant expansion of domestic air connectivity. He explained that the new route would bolster Ekiti’s economic prospects by supporting tourism, commerce, agriculture, and the creative industry.

Prof. Okonkwo expressed gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for creating a conducive operating environment and assured that United Nigerians Airlines will maintain high safety standards, quality service, and reliable operations across its network.

A Gateway to Growth

The launch of commercial flights at Ekiti Airport is more than a transportation milestone; it represents a strategic investment in the state’s future. With better air connectivity, Ekiti is poised to attract investment, stimulate commerce, and become a regional hub for tourism, logistics, and trade.

As the aircraft taxied on the runway and received its ceremonial water salute, it symbolised a state ready to soar — linking its people, economy, and opportunities to the broader skies of Nigeria and beyond.
