Giroud Stars As LAFC Clinch US Open Cup Title

Giroud Stars As LAFC Clinch US Open Cup Title.

Los Angeles FC emerged victorious in the US Open Cup, defeating Sporting Kansas City 3-1 in a thrilling final, with former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud playing a pivotal role.

The 37-year-old Frenchman, who joined the club after leaving AC Milan at the end of the last season, opened the scoring for LAFC in the 53rd minute. Giroud tapped in from close range, giving his side a crucial lead in the match.

However, Kansas City’s Erik Thommy levelled the score, forcing the game into extra time. In the additional period, Mexican defender Omar Campos and Sierra Leonean forward Kei Kamara both found the net, sealing the victory for LAFC.

This triumph is particularly significant for Giroud, who retired from international football in July as France’s all-time leading scorer with 57 goals. He expressed his determination to win trophies after experiencing disappointment in last month’s Leagues Cup final against Columbus Crew.

“I came here to win trophies and to play that kind of final,” Giroud stated. “I was really sad and disappointed for the team regarding the Leagues Cup. We’ve been on a difficult run these last weeks, but we stuck together, and we really wanted to win this trophy for the fans and for the club. It does matter for me, for the boys, and I’m so happy to score in this final and to help the team.”

With this victory, LAFC’s aspirations for a domestic league and cup double remain intact. Historically, only three teams have accomplished this feat, with LA Galaxy being the last to do so in 2005, following Chicago Fire and DC United.

Currently sitting fourth in the MLS Western Conference standings, LAFC is poised to secure a play-off spot as they continue their pursuit of further silverware this season.
